Andrew Griggs

| Good Relations Community Champion Award

Andy Griggs hails from Essex, moved to Newmills with his wife & raised 2 sons. Andy found himself living in a predominantly PUL rural village. Within a mile is the town of Coalisland a RCN town with a lasting troubles legacy history. The two communities though similar were poles apart. There were virtually no cross community connectivity and a high degree of animosity. Andy became involved in a number of community groups in Newmills (History group & local wildlife group). Raising his sons in a divided small rural community challenged Andy & he began developing links to other cultural groups in Coalisland. He wanted to change the status quo. Taking small and careful steps to build up contacts and start conversations around areas of mutual interest & the environment. He established links to the local Brackaville GAA club in Coalisland. The wildlife & gardening group linked with the GAA club & wider community in Coalisland in tackling litter & environmental issues. These relationships have developed over a number of years and both groups (GAA & Newmills) regularly meet & deliver partnership programmes. You cannot underestimate the impact of this voluntary work. A man passionate about the past and our future.
